Captain: Peter Martin
Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Peter spent his vacations on the Cape where he found his love for the ocean. After working in the service industry during his early years, he quickly found himself in management positions. Having managed many successful nightclubs and restaurants he finally opened his own Portuguese restaurant with a childhood friend. After four years in the restaurant business he moved to Florida where he discovered the wonderful world of yachting. Peter is well-known from the popular charter yachts ARIOSO and UNFORGETTABLE where he was Captain for over 11 years. For the last 12+ years he has traveled extensively along the East Coast of the USA, Bahamas and Caribbean. Peter and his wife Bronwyn have been a team since 2012 where they first met onboard ARIOSO. He is extremely competent, enthusiastic, and loves utilizing his hospitality background on charter. Peter holds his MCA Master 3000-ton license and looks forward to using his vast knowledge of yachting and chartering to create a safe and memorable vacation for all onboard motor yacht Lady J.
First Officer - Dive Master: Jarryd Vermaak
Jarryd grew up on Durban Beach in South Africa. He spent 6 years in hospitality where he assisted a cocktail bar progress into a successful franchise and opened stores around South Africa. During this time he competed in flaring competitions (think Tom Cruise in Cocktail) and studied a Masters in Bartending. He also has a degree in marketing and a Diploma in advertising/brand management. Jarryd started yachting in 2009 and since then he has completed five Atlantic crossings and sailed around the Caribbean, Bahamas, U.S.A, Mediterranean, and the Gulf of Mexico totaling around 60,000+ nm. Jarryd currently holds the Officer of the Watch (OOW) and is working towards his Masters license. He enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling, adventures, diving , surfing and long boarding.
Chief Stewardess: Bronwyn Martin
Born and raised on the Wild Coast of South Africa, Bronwyn always had a passion for the open seas. In 2008 Bronwyn entered yachting and most of her experience ranges from 130ft to 230ft yachts. Bronwyn recently completed a three month course in Events Management and Co-ordination through the University of Cape Town and thereafter she gained her Sommelier Level One and Two certificates. Bronwyn holds the "Medical Persons Onboard" and "Medical Person in Charge" certificates and is well qualified in service skills, bar-tending, event organizing and catering to all the guests’ needs. Bronwyn led her team to win the Antigua “Tablescaping” contest in 2012, competing with vessels ranging from 100ft to 160ft. Creating good memories and designing fantastic theme evenings for guests to enjoy is the best part of yachting for her. Bronwyn is an amateur horticulturist with a penchant for flower arranging. She dreams of one day opening her own florist shop in South Africa to continue bringing joy to people. Bronwyn also enjoys reading, fine dining, and painting in her free time. With Bronwyn's friendly personality and great organizational skills LADY J'S guests are sure to be happy and smiling throughout their charter.
First Officer (Temporary): Ken Robinson
Ken was born in the coastal town of Durban, South Africa. He grew up loving the ocean, fishing, wakeboarding and surfing. He studied Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Stellenbosch for 3 years and then moved on to work in the mountains of Northern California as a ski and snowboard instructor. After deciding he preferred the heat over the snow, he joined yachting in Florida. His yachting career has led him to the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Indian oceans. He regards Seychelles as his favorite destination on his travels this far. He plans to finish his Officer of the Watch 3000t license by the end of 2018, a stepping stone that will hopefully lead him one day to a captain’s position. His interests off the water include running, going to gym, hiking and off road mountain biking.
Chief Engineer: Robert Buchar
Robert Buchar hails from New Jersey, USA and currently holds a Y4 Engineering license from the MCA and a 100GT Captain’s license from the US Coast Guard. At the age of 24, Bobby moved to the beach and started working for his brother as a Marine Diesel Mechanic. This exposure resulted in a love for the ocean and a desire to become a full time Marine Engineer. Bobby quickly moved from being land based to working full time on boats- initially in design and construction for a boat building company out of New Jersey, and then joined a 75' Viking Sports fish as Captain/ Engineer, cruising New York to South Florida from 2007 to 2010. Bobby has never looked back and has concentrated on his career as an Engineer—13 years in the business and has completed multiple trans-Atlantic crossings. Bobby enjoys fishing.
Chef: James Howard
James grew up with a passion for cooking and knew at a young age that he wanted to be a chef. He learned most of his culinary techniques from the French at the age of 16 after training in a Michelin star restaurant combined with a culinary school in Cannes, France. He then moved on to work in a traditional French restaurant in the mountains of Auron in the French Alps. After the season ended, he sought out bluer pastures and landed his first yacht job in 2006 sailing around the Mediterranean and acquiring more culinary knowledge. From there, James moved to Ireland where he worked in Dublin for a year at a French-Irish Bistro called "L’Gueuleton”, which is one of the finest and most successful restaurants in Ireland.
It was in 2009 when James landed his first head chef position at a French Gastro-Bistro in Paris at the young age of 21. Once James overhauled the menu, the restaurant went from being a cute, hole-in-the wall establishment to being voted ‘7th Best’ restaurant in all of Paris on TripAdvisor and winning numerous other local and international accolades.
After two and a half years of success in Paris, James once again decided to return to the yachting scene. Since then he has traveled 6 continents learning their culinary traditions and techniques.
James joins Lady J fresh from a 3-month trip traveling and discovering the culinary delights of south-east Asia.
Bosun: Michael Johnson
Michael grew up in sunny Durban, South Africa, spending much of his time in the ocean surfing, fishing, and diving. He completed his degree in Visual Communication while surfing professionally as a junior, competing locally and internationally. After working in the design industry for two years he decided it was time for a change and completed his yachting courses. He joined the yachting industry in 2013 and has not looked back. Michael has cruised the Mediterranean, Bahamas, and the Caribbean working on both private yachts and busy charter yachts. He thrives in the charter environment and enjoys entertaining guests. Michael has his Yacht Masters and is working towards one day being a Captain. In his spare time, he enjoys surfing, training and a couple strums on the old guitar.
Second Stewardess: Kate-Lynne Shaw
Kate-Lynne grew up in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. After finishing high school, Kate-Lynne studied Financial Management and worked as a Para-planner for 3 years. She then decided to give up the 8 – 5 normal routine in order to pursue her passion for traveling and found herself in the yachting industry where she began in June 2014. Kate-Lynne has been fortunate enough to have traveled the North East coast and East coast of the United States, Central America, Bahamas and the Caribbean. She started her Yachting career on M/Y Carpe Diem, 15oft Trinity and then moved onto M/Y Kiss the Sky, 170ft Amels, thereafter to M/Y Amarula Sun 164ft Trinity as Second Stewardess and quickly progressed to Chief Stewardess. She has now joined Lady J as a temporary Stew to complete the interior team. Kate-Lynne has invested in her career as a stewardess over the years and completed a few courses such as Eliminatory First Aid Course, Food Safety and Hygiene as well as Luxury Hospitality Service Specialist Course. Kate’s knowledge and experience will ensure that you will make endless happy memories on board.
Third Stewardess: Julia Cummings
Julia grew up in sunny California and although the weather was perfect, she always desired to see more of the world. After high school, she moved to Switzerland to work as an au-pair and was given the opportunity to travel through Europe in her time off. After a year, she attended the University of California at Berkeley to dive back into the sciences, but simultaneously fell in love with the world of hospitality. Julia never lost her love for travel, and has spent time in Central America, Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and Morocco. Upon returning to Berkeley after a gap year, she spent time working in the craft cocktail industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, fine-tuning her palate and learning the intricacies of bartending. Upon realizing that yachting brought together her love for travel and enthusiasm for hospitality, she never looked back. Julia has experience working on yachts ranging from 125ft to 191ft, along with certifications in Food Safety, Bartending, Wine, and Silver Service. She looks forward to bringing all of her qualifications together to create the most enjoyable experience for guests onboard Lady J.
Deckhand - Dive Instructor: Nikki Moss
Nikki was born and raised in Norfolk, England. She grew up in small rural villages but always had an interest to travel and explore from a young age.
Nikki has many years’ experience working in the corporate world as well as within hospitality, bar tending and waitressing in fine-dining establishments. She has however, always loved to swim and snorkel and turned to SCUBA diving 9 years ago. Nikki became a professional diver with over 1,000 dives of experience back in 2014. She has experience dive leading and instructing worldwide, in very cold waters to beautifully warm oceans. She has worked in the yachting industry as Stewardess, Deckhand and Dive Instructor and cannot wait to have you see the best of the Caribbean and its blue waters with her as your guide and dive buddy!
