MUSE Crew Profile
Crew Profile
Captain – Walter Wetmore (American)
Jimmy Buffett may have had Captain Wetmore in mind when he wrote his classic song “Son of a Son of a Sailor.” Like the song, Walter is the son of a son of a sailor for Norwalk, Connecticut on the north shore of Long Island Sound. He has spent the last 40+ years surrounded by boats and the sea, learning the skills from his forefathers and for the past 18 years has served as Captain of both power and sailing vessels. He has extensive experience in engineering, ships security (he completed the first ISPS course held in the USA) and enjoys the benefits of long standing relationships with people in every facet of the industry. Walter is an experienced build captain and has been working for Palmer Johnson since 2003 on the 120ft, COVER DRIVE, the 123ft, ALTER EGO and of course MUSE which was delivered in June 2006. Walter was responsible for all of the sea trials and preparation for launch and showing the yacht at all of the major shows and festivals. Prior to working for Palmer Johnson he worked as Captain/Build Engineer on the 142ft, CHEVY TOY, the 106ft PASSION and the various GALE WINDS. Walter’s love of the water, adventurous spirit, and extensive experience and intimate knowledge of the Caribbean, Bahamas and New England cruising grounds make him an excellent guide for his guests who seek unique travels or visit places on the chart known only by a fourth generation Captain. Walter holds a US Merchant Marine license for 1600 ton domestic/3000 ton International upon any ocean license in addition to the British license for all Red Ensign vessels of the same tonnage.
First Mate – Mark Shurilla (American)
Mark comes from Chicago and has been working on yachts for over 12 years. He started on sailing yachts out of Hawaii, and after a few deliveries ended up in the Virgin Islands. He has spent many winter seasons in the Caribbean and summers in New England. Some of the yachts he has previously worked on include VIRGINIAN, NATANYA, TARA T, SIROCCO as well as various other sailing yachts. Mark is an avid skier and windsurfer, a certified diver, and enjoys surfing and golf whenever he can. Most intriguing is Mark’s vast experience and knowledge in the field of marine sciences. He has spent over seven years working with various marine mammal programs and has an extensive background in biology which will come in handy when exploring the great big blue with charter guests!
Chef – Jason Wagner
Jason attended the Johnson Country Community College in Kansas, America, where he studied Culinary Arts. During this time he also took an Internship at the Hyatt Regency Crown Centre in order to further his skills and experience. Jason joined PB&J Corporation in the early stages of his career where he worked as Sous Chef at both Grand Street Café and Paulo and Bills. Moving on to work for Mango Room in Kansas City, his role as Sous Chef saw him responsible for food costing and ordering, menu design, marketing, and training schedule employees. Jason then went on to work for Seattle Fish Company, also in Kansas, as a Sales/Account Manager where he educated clients on various products and uses, managed and serviced client accounts and took on various product research and promotion. He carried on in the same role at Arrowhead Specialty Meats in Kansas where he worked before joining MUSE. Jason never fails to impress his guests with his culinary skills and has worked alongside big names such as Jamie Oliver.
Bosun – Neil Sauer (American)
Originally from Warrenton, Virginia, Neil made his way out to Long Island and has worked for various yacht clubs for the past 5 years. He has sailed to Bermuda and up and down the East Coast of America numerous times. He has an extensive fishing background and spent over a year on a 61ft Garlington fishing vessel out of Montauk, New York. Neil enjoys surfing and all water sports, but his true passion is fishing!
Chief Stewardess – Jennifer Bartkowiak (American)
Jennifer comes from Chicago, Illinois and joins the crew on MUSE in 2006 following a stay cruising in Pacific waters around Hawaii. Her athletic skills have shifted from rugby and membership on a championship badminton team to water sports where she kayaks and swims whenever possible. Her cheery disposition brightens everyday and her experience in customer service makes her a welcome addition to the crew.
