PARADISE Crew Profile

Ruthie & Bernie have been providing an excellent charter service on their yacht "Paradise" in the Caribbean for five years now! Bernd lived in Munich, Germany, where he also went to University and got his MBA (Master of Business Administration). In the ten yearsMeet Your Crew:
Ruthie & Bernie
that he lived in Munich he was also a member of the voluntary fire fighters and engaged in the local rescue service.
Sailing means everything to Bernd and his enthusiasm for it is palpable. He was only seven years old when he obtained his first dinghy. He got his first license for sailing on inland seas at the age of fourteen and proved such a natural talent that he commenced giving sailing lessons thereafter.
Together with his brother he progressed to going on long sailing tours on a Dutch Bojertjalk, which led him to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Holland, and the Mediterranean. It was during this time that Bernd gained his considerable knowledge of seamanship. In1974 Bernd gained his Captains License for seagoing vessels under motor and sail on the waterways and continued his passion for sailing on his own ship within Europe. Together with his wife Ruth, he greatly expanded his seamanship by sailing a considerable number of sailing yachts belonging to various owners in the Caribbean. In 1993 the couple took theit yacht to the USA and continued to explore the American East Coast and the Bahamas under sail.
In 1996 Bernd and Ruth immigrated to British Columbia, Canada, where they opened up a Guest- and Cattle Ranch, which over the years was much frequented by guests from both America and Europe. But after years of being high and dry on his Ranch, Bernd's yearning for the ocean and for sailing became unbearable and he felt compelled to follow his calling and returned to sea.
One reason for Bernd's love of the sea may lie in the fact that Bernd's past is steeped in the history of sailing. His great grandfather and brothers were owners and captains of trimast ships. They sailed over the Atlantic and settled in Houston, Texas, where Bernd's family lives to this day. Today Bernd is once again sailing in the Caribbean on his own sailing yacht - a Irwin 60' - aboard which is a great joy for him to share his love of the beauty of the Caribbean Islands with his guests.
Ruth grew up on the Baltic Coast of Germany and from early on totally took to the water element. So it was only natural for her to learn to sail whilst still a young girl. She loved it! After finishing her schooling she worked within the Public Health Authorities and later on completed her studies in education and nutrition at University. Then she taught nutrition and cooking to youth students at school.
Ruth gained her Captains License for seagoing vessels under motor and sail on the waterways and joined Bernd in sailing to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and later to America, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
Guests visiting the Guest- and Cattle Ranch that she and Bernd ran in Canada got a taste of her superb cooking. Ruth even prepared her delectable food using organic vegetables and fruits harvested from her own garden. Now she loves the challenge of being chef and treating guests to delicious meals onboard their sailing yacht "Paradise" using fresh, mostly organic products as well.
It is easy to relax and enjoy the company of Bernd and Ruth. They take great pleasure in making the best out of what life has to offer them. They have the wonderful ability of making guests feel at home and enjoy sharing life aboard their sailing yacht. Guests also have the opportunity of receiving informal teaching of sailing skills if they want.Welcome aboard the "Paradise"

PARADISE Testimonials
January 2012
Ken and I recently returned from our BVI charter aboard Paradise with Bernie and Ruthie, and I wanted to provide this testimonial as soon as possible because our experience was nothing short of spectacular.
I am aware that I’m writing this as much for prospective charterers as I am for captain and crew (it’s great to be able to rely upon these testimonials when making vacation decisions). And for that reason, I first want to say that if you’re searching for a monohull sailing yacht in the 60-ft range that can comfortably accommodate up to 4 guests, your search should stop right here, right now, with Paradise.
My husband and I have been sailing for 20 years, and have chartered numerous times between US coastal waters and the BVI. During that time we’ve experienced everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. We know that the most beautiful yacht cannot compensate for a sub-standard crew, nor can a seasoned and dynamic crew make up for a disappointing vessel. With Bernie and Ruthie aboard Paradise, you get the very best of both: a boat that’s supremely comfortable, laid-out perfectly, spotless from bow to stern and beautifully appointed; and a crew that’s rich in knowledge and experience, highly-qualified, attentive to your every need and desire, smart, savvy and really fun sailing companions.
We were blessed with magnificent wind for our entire charter, and took the best advantage of it, setting our itinerary day by day with lots of flexibility depending on our mood, the wind and the currents. From our departure point at Scrub Island to Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Monkey Point, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, Cooper Island and points in between, Bernie and Ruthie proved a robust sailing team, expertly navigating the lively waters of the Caribbean and Atlantic, and deftly negotiating densely populated anchorages for protected overnighting. They were more than happy to turn over the helm, too, at our request, and allow us the fun of sailing a boat that is more than twice the size of our own.
Our evenings were always beautifully serene – a welcome contrast to the lively days at sea. Beginning with cocktails (and might I mention that we never found the bartender or the bar selection lacking) through dinner at sunset in the spacious cockpit (replete with mood lighting!) we were treated to a wonderful variety of succulent meals, all equally delicious, and all prepared from fresh, organic ingredients from scratch and to order by Ruthie. Surprisingly, on the last night of our charter, Bernie took over the culinary responsibility and delivered a knockout Sambuca Shrimp entrée as well.
Finally, a good crew can be distinguished from a great crew by measuring its response to challenges and crises. We had one such opportunity during our charter. During our final night aboard (at about 5 a.m.) we awoke to obvious commotion on deck. We raced topside to discover that a 110-ft. power cruiser which had been anchored well ahead of our port bow at Marina Cay was dragging anchor and was in danger of hitting no fewer than five much smaller boats (Paradise among them and likely first to be hit) as it drifted quickly backward in the howling wind (probably blowing 25-30 knots overnight). Our boats, of course, were swinging on their anchors in the wind, considerably increasing the chance of collision. The crew jumped into action. Ruthie tied bumpers to our port stern and Bernie tried to hail the boat’s captain on the radio while shining the boat repeatedly with a high intensity spotlight, while my husband repeatedly blew an air horn, all in an attempt to rouse the obviously sleeping crew and passengers. I began snapping pictures to document in case liability became an issue.
By this time, all passengers aboard the smaller boats in imminent danger were topside (some in life jackets) yelling to awaken passengers and crew on the drifting boat. After it became clear that our initial attempts had failed (and with no time to waste), Bernie boarded the dinghy with spotlight in hand and circled the drifting vessel. Within a few minutes, we saw the first of the large boat’s crew alight. He mustered the captain and crew of their vessel; their engine started and they began lifting anchor. By this time, the rogue vessel was within 20-25 feet of our stern. They pulled away safely, however, and no boats were damaged.
After dawn broke some time later, we were visited by a delegation of passengers from various other boats at anchor who wanted to thank Paradise for saving them from what could have been an unmitigated mess.
Later that morning we enjoyed a spectacular German pancake breakfast before having to return to the airport for our flight home. We made up for a little lost sleep on the plane, dreaming of warm breezes, perfectly trimmed sails, and our next charter aboard our favorite boat (Paradise) with our favorite crew.
Many, many thanks to our new friends, Bernie & Ruthie, for a week of pure joy.

Hi,
Sorry to respond so late. I did want to write in regards to our charter experience on Paradise. I'll start with the boat. It was extremely clean and well maintained. It is obvious Bernie and Ruthie work very hard to keep everything looking so nice. It was not just nice to look at, but it was comfortable as well. Bernie and Ruthie are extraordinary people and while I am sure the trip would have been fun no matter what, they certainly enhanced it and I can't imagine chartering with anyone else. They went above and beyond their duties to make sure we were safe and enjoying ourselves at all times. They are both very pleasant people and I think I speak for everyone in my family when I tell you that we very much enjoyed their company! Bernie and Ruthie are just amazing people and they complement each other very well. I felt safe and confident with Bernie as captain and Ruthie is very competent as well.
The food was absolutely amazing!!!!! Ruthie's cooking was incredible and I loved every single meal. She amazed all of us with what she could do with such a small kitchen. It was obvious she worked hard on preparing tasty healthy meals and I am very grateful she did. Usually on a vacation, I eat overpriced mediocre food. Ruthie's was a pleasant surprise!
I can write all day about how wonderful the trip was and praise Bernie and Ruthie but I won't use up all your valuable time. Bottom line is we had a wonderful time! Bernie and Ruthie are truly amazing people and they made a profound impact on me. I have so much respect and admiration for them both. It is rare to meet two very special people like them and I am so glad that” Dad” found them. I feel like it was meant to be! I do not know how to get in touch with them, so please forward this email to them if you do not mind. Thank you for everything and have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Andrew Feinstein

Dear ____
This was a second charter that you arranged for me with Paradise. The boat along with Bernie and Ruth are simply put way above others in their profession. Their pride, knowledge of sailing is beyond comparison. They are the ultimate in their profession. They are wonderful hosts and a joy to be with.
It was my sons’ first sailing trip and I was a little apprehensive. They all told me it was the best trip of their lives.
It will not be my last trip with Bernie and Ruth. Their enthusiasm, skill and true kindness and concern for your safety and comfort is so reassuring that I could never settle for any other charter experience.
Thank you for your patience and skill putting this charter together with a second charter on Paradise. Bernie and Ruth have an extraordinary talent of making you feel so comfortable.
Sincerely,
Richard Feinstein

Bernie & Ruthie!
10 times we did charter in the BVI's on 6 different yachts with 6 different crews but by far "Paradise" is the best! Thank you for this memorable wonderful trip “in Paradise on Paradise” with great sailing, great snorkelling, plenty to eat and new friends, too!! Your hospitality was greatly appreciated making our stay fantastic.

Dear Broker! Below is a testimonial for "Paradise" that I'd like you to use and share with Ruthie and Bernie. We loved the trip...in 6 short days, the experience sunk so deeply into my pores that readjustment has been terrible! As I am sure you know, there are no nicer people than Bernie and Ruthie-- and Bernie constantly sang your praises as an excellent agent. Thanks for arranging our charter and for being such a great booking agent for Paradise--they deserve it! T. Murdock
TESTIMONIAL BELOW
We just returned from a week on Paradise with another couple and are slowly readjusting to life "post Paradise". Everything about our trip was magnificent. The ship was spacious, extremely comfortable, and immaculate. The best part of Paradise however, is Bernie and Ruthie. They are amazing hosts and captains who go to great lengths to make sure you are satisfied with every detail of your trip. They carefully planned our itinerary each day to make the best of the wind and current conditions, and they anchored us in protected spots in the evening so that we would sleep undeterred by swell. As extremely accomplished sailors, their skill and attention to detail inspired our complete confidence. They were very attentive to our stated interests, sailing hard to Anegada and back one day and taking us to beautiful, uncrowned snorkelling places and pristine beaches for walking and sunning. In between sailing stints, Ruthie prepared delicious, healthy gourmet meals that were attentively and joyfully served by Bernie. Above all, Ruthie and Bernie are extraordinarily warm, caring people whose love for humanity and enthusiasm for life shine through in all they do. They made the trip more special than we could have imagined.

RE: Thanks for a Wonderful Holiday on Paradise
Dear Ruth and Bernd,
Thanks for such a wonderful holiday with you aboard Paradise. The first time we ever chartered a sailboat was with you. At that time my wife said it was “the best vacation ever”. This time it was even better.
The two of you and Paradise are a perfect match for us. You are great team. It was delightful to spend a week with you. You have developed a wonderful sense of pacing with everything; including the food and sailing.
We wanted to introduce our friends, Sarah and David, to the joys of sailing and snorkelling. The Paradise was the perfect match for us. You did a great job helping to introduce them to wonderful snorkelling and cruising under sail. As Sarah was concerned about possible seasickness, we really appreciate how careful you were to find us great places to moor and anchor to assure great evenings without major swell issues. Sarah and David were ecstatic about the holiday. The food and hospitality were as wonderful as I recall from before. Both the preparation and presentation were very nice. More important, the two of you are a joy to sail with. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have been able to sail with you.
We will do our best to come back and sail with you again.
Thanks for your help.
Cordially
Bob
Bernie and Ruthie,
Stephanie and I along with Jim and Sue had a wonderful sailing trip with you both. You made the trip precious and we felt like kings and queens. You took great care of us as well as showed us some awesome snorkeling spot and experiences of a life time. We so appreciate your kindness and relationship. It was nice of you to share your passion and a little bit of your personal life with us. You never rushed us to any of the anchorages and we got to see lots more of the Virgin Islands then we thought was possible. The food you prepared was elegantly displayed and tasted out of this world. It was so hard not wanting to help so you could relax but every time we tried to you politely declined our help. Yet when all was done you came and joined us and we really appreciated that.
So thank you for the wonderful time and your friendship.
James and Stephanie

Somewhat belatedly, I wanted to give you feedback on our charter aboard SY Paradise during January 24-31, 2010.
In a word, the charter was FABULOUS. Bernie & Ruthie were delightful and a pleasure to be with. As Ruthie so aptly stated when we got off the boat in Virgin Gorda, “You came aboard as guests and left as friends”. We very much hope to see them again.
The boat was meticulously clean, well equipped and extremely comfortable for 2 couples on a charter together.
The food was amazing. We gave Ruthie ovations after almost every meal. We had no interest in going ashore for dinner when we could have Ruthie’s gourmet cooking on board. Both Bernie and Ruthie provided exceptional service and did everything possible to make us feel welcome (and special) on board. They worked together seamlessly and effortlessly. After having sailed for over 40 years, it is rare to find a couple who can do that!
The sailing was amazing and the weather turned for the better when we arrived. We had terrific breeze and had a wonderful time exploring the BVI. I was thrilled to sail the boat for long stretches, including entering the North Sound of Virgin Gorda.
Your have a great listing with Paradise and with Bernie and Ruthie, in particular. They are first class all the way. We would highly recommend Paradise and Bernie and Ruthie to those who are looking for a first class experience on a boat in the 55-60 ft. range.
Missy, we had dreamed of this vacation for 25 years. It did not disappoint. It certainly will not take us another 25 years to get back to the BVI.
Thanks so much for all of your help.
All the best,
David E. Bowe

Dear Bernie and Ruthie:
Pat and I didn't know quite what to expect on our first visit to BVI and our first crewed sailboat charter. After a week on the Paradise, all we can say is "Wow!" The design of the boat is so "user-friendly" that we were always comfortable, but we especially enjoyed our time around the table in the centre cockpit . . . probably because it involved so many spectacular meals, fine wine and wonderful visits with the two of you while we took in the sights of BVI. We only can offer one piece of advice: "Don't Change Anything!"
Best Wishes,
Steve & Pat Platt
Dear Ruthie and Bernie,
The 2 weeks trip we made with you through the US and BVI was truly wonderful. It was for us exactly the right mix of relaxing and pampering, and joining in the sailing of the boat. It was not our first sailing trip, but certainly it was by far the nicest!
You made us feel extremely welcome and we greatly appreciate all your efforts to cater to our every whim. The quality and freshness of the food and the love and energy you put in it for us have made an unforgettable impression. We still do not understand how you manage to keep your provisions so fresh! The breakfast was 100 times better than in the 4 star hotels where we have been before the sailing. Lunch and dinner meals were extremely delicious and at the same time healthy. It is the first time we didn’t have to make any selection from a menu, but yet greatly enjoyed the 5-star meals.
Ruthie is a very gifted chef, and the food was perfect on every single occasion. You should really write a book about provisioning in BVI and providing masterpieces from the galley: Michelin will one day provide you with the stars!
Bernie, thank you for sharing some very valuable and practical guidance on sailing: you managed to wet my appetite to get my own captains-license! You guys sure know your way around these islands, and thank you for identifying time and again a new and interesting location for exploring above, in and under the water!
Thank you for your going the extra mile, when arranging Hans’s scuba to the wreck of the RMS Rhone and arranging the SPA treatment for Kirsi. Also the special touch during the X-mas time meals was a wonderful addition!
We have had a wonderful 2 weeks, with 2 very special people with a very unique background. It was a huge pleasure to get to know you, and we certainly hope to visit you again some day.

I liked the area, but will sail a new area next time because I like to see different places
6. Could we have helped you further in any way?
7. May we post this review on our website?
Yes
8. Additional comments on your charter?
For the week of May 22, 2011, we had very cloudy days and no winds - extremely unusual for the Virgin Islands - and I thought the week was going to be a bust, but it turned out to be as enjoyable as any other vacation, thanks to the hospitality of Ruth and Bernd. From the moment we boarded, I had a good feeling about the trip because of their personality. Ruth proved the perfect hostess and added a balanced congruity to Bernd's humor and joviality. No matter how demanding our requests, they never failed to provide what we wanted. The boat was as immaculately kept as anyone could require, and the food was delicious and, yet, simple and healthy. I couldn't think of anyone else I would recommend for someone looking for a really laid-back, "get away from it all" kind of vacation.
