My jobs ranged from short order cook in a bowling alley to a hospital operating room technician until I found a love of boating!. While traveling and working in New Zealand I landed a job on a fishing boat as a cook and "fish sizer"
After returning home from New Zealand and working on land for about 6 months I realized that I missed the water. I traveled to Ft. Lauderdale, took up residence at a crew house, and began to "walk the docks". My first job was on the 168' Monte Carlo. I began as a day worker while the boat was undergoing refit and I was hired on as crew after 5 weeks. Interestingly enough, just before the Yacht was due to make its first voyage the Captain quit. I quickly learned that if a Captain leaves, so does his crew. So back to day work, but only for a few days!
Onto a 74' Sunseeker based out of Connecticut, called, Sunsation. This is where I really learnt what it means to work on a Yacht. I was as green as they come!! But I caught a break with a retired boat captain who taught me the ropes and I learnt all about the huge maintenance demands that go into keeping a yacht in great shape. After the summer in New England, I helped deliver the boat down south, where I learnt many things about navigation and loved the experience. I then went along on a delivery from Key West to Naples where the captain was kind enough to allow me to chart the voyage!
Because of an ongoing injury, I was forced to return to Canada to rehabilitate, and after I was healed, I undertook a month long trip to Honduras with my father working with "habitat for humanity" and then I backpacked for a further 4 months. While in Nicaragua, I learnt how to spear fish AND how hard surfing was! I loved the water so much I took my open water SCUBA course in Panama.
I returned to Canada and started a new career in the Oil Patch in Northern Alberta, I enjoyed the people and what my job, but I cannot wait to get back on the water with Yacht Promenade and learn more about boating!
I enjoy being active as much as possible. Back home I loved the winter. My winter sports were; every kind of hockey, Snowfering (wind-surfing on frozen lakes) and down hill canoeing, a personal favorite of mine. During the summer my favorite activities are all to do with the water as well.
